Foods for Fertility

August 28th, 2008 by Jill Blakeway, M.S. L. Ac.

dreamstime_5877264As some of you know I was on the CBS Early Show this week talking about foods that enhance fertility. You can watch the piece here if you missed it. It was a blustery day out there on the plaza and the segment was quite brief so I wanted to use this blog to give you more information about diet and fertility. Here is the advice we give our patients who are trying to conceive.

Check out this soup…

August 24th, 2008 by Jill Blakeway, M.S. L. Ac.

tomsoupI love Simply Recipes. For those of you that haven’t discovered it yet it’s a cookery blog written by Elise Bauer from California. In it she records many of her family’s favorite recipes. It is often a source of inspiration to me and lots of her recipes have become favorites of my family too.

So tonight when faced with a glut of tomatoes from the garden I turned to Simply Recipes for some ideas. I found a recipe for Roasted Eggplant and Tomato Soup that was so great I wanted to point it out to you. Its healthy, low calorie and packed with flavor because all the vegetables are roasted.

Does soy affect sperm count?

August 22nd, 2008 by Jill Blakeway, M.S. L. Ac.

dreamstime_4975449Recently patients have been asking me about this study which was based on research at The Harvard School of Public Health and published in the journal Human Reproduction. It seems to suggest that men who eat a lot of soy are more likely to have a low sperm count. It also showed that overweight men were the most likely to be affected by soy consumption.

Wholegrain Banana Bread with Flax Seeds

August 17th, 2008 by Jill Blakeway, M.S. L. Ac.

dreamstime_533739As many of you know I have been trying to limit the amount of food my family wastes. With that in mind I salvaged three very overripe bananas that my husband was about to toss on the compost heap and set out to make a version of banana bread that contained whole grains. The end result was better than I expected – moist and not too sweet. My daughter and her boyfriend gave it a thumbs up so I thought I’d pass it on to you.

Packed Lunches for Kids

August 12th, 2008 by Margaret Sikowitz M.S. L. Ac.

Hi Everyone,

Its Margaret Sikowitz here, blogging while Jill is on vacation.

dreamstime_44327831I can’t believe it’s the middle of August already. Like many of you I am enjoying a slightly more relaxed summer schedule but recent talk in the office turned to one of the aspects of back-to-school that fill many of us with foreboding, namely packing lunch. If your kid is old enough to be bringing lunch, she’s probably got a grasp of what’s considered healthy, and what’s considered a treat. However, if she’s like my daughter, she’d be happy with a cupcake and a piece of gum. So, after lots of trial and error, here’s what I’ve learned:

Giving Back – The Thailand Water Project

August 6th, 2008 by Jill Blakeway, M.S. L. Ac.

workHello Everyone!

It’s Emma, Jill’s daughter here. I’ve hijacked my Mum’s blog to thank all of you who supported my trip to Thailand to take part in the Water Project. Without your generous donations none of it would have been possible. So…Thank you.

As some of you know I was in Thailand as part of an ongoing project that my school organizes in conjunction with The Pakanyor Foundation. Our task was to build a well and purification system for a village without access to clean water. My school has sent a team to do this every year for the past 20 years so it felt like a real privilege to carry on the tradition. We lived with the villagers of Ban Huay Laung and worked along side them to build the well. I have been back for about a week and no longer take turning on the tap for granted and it is safe to say that my appreciation for the smaller things has grown, and my hunger to help more people has increased.
